Most people can sing – irrespective of what they might have been told at school! It is a real joy to explore your singing voice and develop what is your own unique instrument. Especially within a choir, people find that being part of a body of people creating wonderful harmonies and different emotional effects is an incredibly uplifting experience. Additionally, there are many proven personal and health benefits of belonging to a choir, which include:
Friendship & social opportunities
We have friendships in the Fishpond Choir that have lasted 25 years and those that have been forged in the last 3 months, as many new members have joined us. A real connection is created as we learn and perform beautiful music together.
All our new members are welcomed by members of our choral team, who act as hosts and mentors until you find you feet and have developed a group of friends.
confidence & ENERGY
Everyone should have the opportunity to experience the reaction and applause from an audience when they have been emotionally moved by a performance. Being a part of a choir is an ideal way to experience this ‘performance buzz’. It is a wonderfully energising feeling and a real achievement that everyone can feel proud of.
Health benefits
It has been proven that singing offers significant health benefits, acting as aerobic exercise, boosting happy hormones while lowering stress, strengthening the immune system, improving lung capacity, aiding pain management, enhancing mood, building social connections, and even helping with sleep issues. Singing is surprisingly physical and provides both physical workouts for the lungs and muscles, not to mention a complete break from your day-to-day worries!
Discovering new music
There is so much wonderful music to discover, and our Fishpond Choir repertoire encompasses beautiful music from a diverse mix of genres. Our music is selected by our Repertoire Advisory Group. This is made up of choir members who work with our musical director to select music that our members enjoy singing and can master to performance level, and that our audiences will love.
Developing new skills & techniques
Musicians are always learning, and embracing fresh techniques and ideas. Whether you are completely new to singing and don’t yet read music, or whether you are an established musician with extensive instrumental or choral experience, we aim to provide new opportunities for musical development in a supportive and exciting way.
As a community choir, our strength lies in having a healthy mix of members at both ends of the experience spectrum and who enjoy helping one another. From music reading classes, to supportive voice-section practices in members’ homes, vocal technique sessions, come & sing days, ensemble and solo opportunities and rehearsals with guest conductors – there are lots of opportunities to explore new techniques and skills.
