After obtaining the B Mus degree (with distinction for both Piano and Singing as Practical Majors), Dana did the Higher Diploma in Education. He then went on to obtain the B Mus Honours (cum laude) and M Mus (cum laude). Research towards his Master’s degree in the UK was made possible with grants from the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Fund of Anglo American as well as the Haggie Trust Fund.
Dana’s vocal mentors were: Prof. George van der Spuy, Ms Sarie Lamprecht (South Africa); Prof. Erik Werba and Prof. Hanno Blaschke (Germany), John Bacon and Dr. Jane Manning OBE (UK).
Apart from his performances as a singer, and ability as pianist Dana also composes, arranges and teaches music. He has also been involved as a choir master and musical director for many years. Highlights of his time with the Fishpond Choir from Matlock Bath include their participation at in the Nelson Mandela Tribute Concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall, and their two short tours to France.
Over the years the Fishpond Choir has developed into a very accomplished unit thanks to the patience and professionalism of its leaders. What comes over most from its performances, along with the quality of the voices, is the sheer joy in making music. With its happy informal style the choir so obviously enjoys performing and its enthusiasm endears it to every audience for whom it performs.
Anne Bollen de Waal was born in the Eastern Cape in South Africa and matriculated in Johannesburg at the National School for the Arts.
She obtained her teaching degree from the university of the Witwatersrand, where she received the only nomination for the sought-
Anne taught music at various schools and distinguished herself as a choir mistress and accompanist. A number of musicals for schools and youth in South Africa and the UK have flowed from the pen of this gifted composer and have been performed to great acclaim.
Anne was the accompanist for the Randburg Male Voice Choir, one of the foremost choirs of its kind in South Africa. She has done studio recordings in South Africa and the UK and her work has been heard on the SABC and the BBC.
In the lighter music field Ms Bollen De Waal performs professionally as accompanist to her husband, Dana de Waal. She also accompanies the highly regarded Fishpond Choir, from Matlock Bath in the Derbyshire Dales.
The choir's performances are simply spellbinding, with some hauntingly beautiful harmonies, evocative arrangements of traditional lyrics, and perfectly orchestrated music, in fact the whole experience of listening to them is one of sheer pleasure; there is an uplifting joy in this magical blending of voices. But don't just take my word for it, go and join the cultural revolution at the Fishpond Hotel, Matlock Bath, where you will find the biggest, and perhaps uniquely -
